What is the difference between a domain name and hosting?

Do I need both a domain name and hosting?
Usually, yes. If you want a normal website and email setup, you will generally need both.
Some people register their domain first to secure the name, then organise hosting later. Others already have a domain and simply need reliable hosting for it.
How do I choose the right domain name?
The best domain names are usually short, easy to spell, easy to remember, and closely related to your business or brand.
I generally recommend avoiding odd spellings, unnecessary hyphens, or anything people are likely to forget when they try to type it later.
Should I choose a .com.au, .au, or .com domain?
That depends on your audience and how you want your business to be seen.
.com.au is still a strong, familiar choice for Australian businesses. .au is shorter and more modern. .com can be useful if you want a broader or more international feel.
In many cases, registering more than one version is a smart way to protect your brand.
Do I need an ABN or ACN to register a .au domain?
Not always. Some .au domains can be registered under other valid Australian presence categories, depending on the extension and eligibility rules.
If you are registering a .com.au for a business, then your ABN or ACN may be required. If you are unsure, I can help guide you through what applies to your situation.
How long does it take for a domain name to start working?
Sometimes it can be quite quick, but domain and DNS changes can take a little while to fully update across the internet.
This is normal. In many cases everything starts working sooner, but it is wise to allow a bit of time for things to settle properly.
Can I move my domain or hosting later if I need to?
Yes. Domains can generally be transferred between providers, and websites can also usually be moved from one hosting account to another.
The goal should always be to make that process as smooth and stress-free as possible.
What happens if I forget to renew my domain name?
If a domain is not renewed on time, it can expire and may eventually become available for someone else to register.
This is one of the big reasons I take renewals seriously and do my utmost to contact clients before a domain is at risk of being lost.
What kind of hosting do I actually need?
Most people do not need the biggest or most expensive hosting plan. They just need something stable, secure, and appropriate for the type of website they have.
The right setup depends on things like site size, traffic, email needs, and whether you are running WordPress or a custom-built site.
